Writing
Aims
At Victoria Road, we wholeheartedly believe that everyone has the potential to be a writer! Our goal is to ignite a love for writing in all our students by providing them with a high-quality education that covers a variety of writing techniques and genres tailored for different audiences.
We focus on helping pupils speak, read, and write fluently, enabling them to express their ideas and emotions confidently. We take pride in fostering a culture where students cherish their writing, emphasising beautiful presentation and handwriting. We understand that great writers are often avid readers; the richness of their reading experience greatly influences their writing ability.
Through our oracy approach, we encourage language learning through conversation, enriched by quality texts. Our writing curriculum is designed to be inclusive and engaging, ensuring every child knows more, remembers more, and can apply their skills independently.
We aim to instil a sense of joy in writing, build stamina across subjects, and help our pupils express themselves fully. We set high expectations for presentation, allowing students to take pride in their work, and we strive to equip them with essential writing skills for their future journey. Together, we can make writing a joyful adventure!
Implementation
At Victoria Road, we follow an exciting and comprehensive approach to teaching writing through our Pathways to Write scheme, designed for all students from Early Years to Year 6. This engaging methodology focusses on building vocabulary, reading, and writing skills, guiding children from making their first marks to writing confidently for various audiences and purposes. Our carefully selected core texts bring to life quality fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, ensuring every child has enriching literary experiences. We also emphasise tailored teaching strategies to challenge our advanced writers, making sure that all students can thrive in their writing journey. It's all about fostering a love for writing while equipping our learners with the skills they need to express themselves creatively!
We folllow the 2014 English National Curriculum that aims to ensure that all pupils in KS1 and KS2:

- Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information.
- Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for Reading, writing and spoken language.
- Appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.
- Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
- Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.

- Promote oracy throughout the school by encouraging the pupils to speak with confidence, clarity and eloquence across a range of topics, adapt their use of language for a range of different purposes and audiences and celebrate the diversity of our language.
- Give pupils a voice to share their ideas with the world; to express, explore and communicate emotions and the skills to write inside and outside school – anywhere and at any time.
